Special Congressional Elections
There are special elections for one U.S. Senate and two U.S. House seats to complete expiring terms. These are all concurrent with elections for a full term, so voters will have two separate opportunities to cast a ballot. The winners will serve out the final weeks of the 118th Congress.
There is also a Senate special election in Nebraska for a seat not up until 2026.
California U.S. Senate
This special election will complete the term of Dianne Feinstein (D), who died in 2023. The nominees are Rep. Adam Schiff (D, CA-30) and former Major League Baseball player Steve Garvey.
Schiff and Garvey are also the candidates in the regular election for a six-year term. Schiff is favored in both elections.
Sen. Laphonza Butler was appointed by Gov. Gavin Newsom after Feinstein's death. She chose not to run for a full term. She will serve until the winner of the special election is sworn in.
Polls close at 11:00 PM ET.
Nebraska U.S. Senate
The special election will be for the final two years of former Sen. Ben Saase's term. That seat is next up in 2026. Saase resigned in January, 2023 to become president of the University of Florida. Newly sworn-in Gov. Jim Pillen appointed his predecessor Pete Ricketts to fill the seat until this special election. Ricketts is on the ballot and heavily favored to win.
Texas U.S. House District 18
This seat became vacant with the death of Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D) in July. Erica Lee Carter, who is the daughter of Jackson Lee, is running to complete her term. She faces two Republicans on the all-party ballot. If no candidate gets a majority, there will be a runoff. However, that is very unlikely in this deep blue district.
Carter is not on the ballot for a full two-year term. Former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner is expected to win that election.
Polls close at 8:00 PM ET.
Wisconsin U.S. House District 8
Republican Mike Gallagher resigned his seat in April. Advancing from the August primary were Republican Tony Wied and Democrat Kristin Lyerly. These two are also on the ballot for a full two-year term. Wied is favored in both elections.
Polls close at 9:00 PM ET.
