Legislative Special Elections in Virginia and New Hampshire

While we have a couple legislative special elections on the calendar this Tuesday, attention will quickly turn to next Tuesday, April 4. That day brings an election to determine the ideological edge going forward on the Wisconsin Supreme Court. The general election for Chicago mayor will also take place, featuring two Democrats with strongly different views on the city's crime problem. The latest poll showed the race to be within the margin of error.

Legislative Special Elections

Virginia State Senate District 9

Democrats hold a narrow 21-18 margin over Republicans in the Virginia State Senate. There is one vacancy. Members serve four-year terms; the next regularly scheduled elections are in November.

The open seat is in the Richmond-area District 9. Democrat Jennifer McClellan resigned prior to being sworn in to the U.S. House of Representatives earlier this month. She won a special election last month to complete the term of the late Donald McEachin (D).

McClellan won by 80% to 19% over Libertarian Mark Lewis in 2019. The nominees are Republican Steve Imholt and Democrat Lamont Bagby. Imholt is the first Republican to vie for for the seat in more than a decade.

Polls close at 7:00 PM Eastern Time.

New Hampshire State House District Hillsborough 3 (Primaries)

With 400 members at full strength, the New Hampshire House of Representatives is the largest legislative body in the United States. The narrowly-divided chamber currently has 201 Republicans and 197 Democrats along with two vacancies.

Hillsborough 3 is a multi-seat district based in Nashua. There are three seats, only one of which currently has a sitting member - Democrat Fred Davis.

Tuesday's primaries begin the process to fill the seat previously held by Democrat Stacie-Marie Laughton, who resigned in December. Marc Plamondon has no opposition for the Democratic nomination. On the GOP ballot are Joost Baumeister and David Narkunas. The general election is scheduled for May 16.

Polls close at 8:00 PM Eastern Time.

The other Hillsborough 3 vacancy is a bit of an unusual situation. Democrat David Cote, who has served in the House since 1983, was reelected in November. However, he has not been sworn in due to ongoing health challenges
