Live Results: Alabama State House Special Election

Voters in one of the few competitive legislative districts in Alabama head to the polls Tuesday. Democrats are attempting to flip the seat, although the outcome won't impact control of a chamber dominated by Republicans.

Alabama State House District 10

Republicans hold a large 75-27 margin over Democrats in the Alabama House of Representatives. There are three vacancies. Members serve four-year terms; the next elections are in 2026.

The Huntsville area District 10 is in the northern part of the state. Republican David Cole resigned in August, 2023, after being indicted on voter fraud.

This is a battleground district: Cole won by 52% to 45% over Democrat Marilyn Lands in 2022.

Lands is back on the ballot in this special election. Teddy Powell is the GOP nominee. The result may provide some insight as to how the recent IVF court ruling - and subsequent legislative response - is playing with the public.

For more background on the candidates and issues, see this voter's guide. Polls close at 8:00 PM Eastern Time.

The other vacancies are in Districts 27 and 52.

In District 27, Republican Wes Kitchens was elected to the State Senate earlier this year. A GOP special primary will be held next Tuesday. There are six candidates on the ballot, so an April 30 runoff is possible. No Democrats are contesting the seat.

The District 52 vacancy occurred earlier this month, when Democrat John Rogers resigned after pleading guilty to federal criminal charges. That seat will be filled later this year.
