This Tuesday, we're following three State House special elections. In Mississippi, two vacancies will be filled via runoff, while an open seat is filled in Connecticut.
Polls in all three contests close at 8:00 PM Eastern Time.
Connecticut State House District 113
Democrats have a large majority in the Connecticut House of Representatives. The party holds 102 seats, with Republicans controlling 48. District 113 is the only vacancy. Members serve two-year terms; the next regular elections are in 2026.
Republican Jason Perillo resigned after winning a February State Senate special election. Perillo had held the seat for 17 years, and was unopposed for reelection in 2022. In 2020, under slightly different boundaries, Perillo won by 64% to 36% over his Democratic challenger.
The nominees are Amy Romano (R) and Michael Duncan (D).
Polls close at 8:00 PM Eastern Time.
Mississippi State House Districts 23 and 82
Republicans have a large majority in the 122 member Mississippi House of Representatives. Currently, the party holds 78 seats. Democrats control 40, with two independents. Members serve four-year terms; the next elections are in 2027.
The two vacancies will be filled in Tuesday's special runoff elections, necessitated when no candidate received a majority in the March 25 special elections.
District 23 became vacant when Republican Andrew Stepp died in December. In 2023, Stepp was elected by a 72% to 16% margin over his Democratic challenger.
Perry Van Bailey (41% of the vote) and Colby Bollinger (32%) advanced from the five-person field. Van Bailey held this seat for about a year before Stepp. He won a January, 2023 special election over Stepp by just seven votes. Stepp then defeated Van Bailey in the November rematch for a full term.
While the election is nonpartisan, both candidates are conservative.
Mississippi State Senate District 82
The prior District 82 incumbent, Democrat Charles Young Jr., died in December. Young defeated incumbent Democrat Wilbert Jones in the 2011 Democratic Primary. After that, he faced no primary or general election opposition through his final win in 2023.
Gregory Elliott (40% of the vote) and Joseph Norwood (30%) advanced from the three-person field. Norwood won by just three votes over the third place finisher.
Norwood is a Democrat. Elliott appears to be unaffiliated.
