New York had 27 congressional districts this past decade. Democrats hold a 19-8 majority after losing two seats to the GOP in 2020. Controlling the process, Democrats passed a new map that positioned them to win as many as 22 seats. That map was an overreach, invalidated by the courts as a partisan gerrymander.

A remedial map, now in place, was created for the court by a redistricting expert. The map favors Democrats 16-6, with four highly competitive districts. It has also shaken up the Democratic delegation, with long-time incumbents Carolyn Maloney and Jerry Nadler competing in the District 12 primary. One will be out of a job.
