Part of the 'blue wall', Michigan had voted Democratic from 1992 until Donald Trump flipped it in 2016. It was the closest state that year; Trump won by about 0.2%.

Joe Biden returned it to the Democratic column in 2020, winning by about 3%.

The state is widely seen as one of seven battlegrounds that will decide a closely-contested 2024 presidential election.

There are three highly-competitive races this year.  In Districts 7 and 8, Democratic incumbents are leaving; these races are seen as toss-ups. In District 10, Republican John James is seeking a second term. In one of the closest races of 2022, James won by 0.5% over Democrat Carl Marlinga. This year's election is a rematch between the two.
