Washington primaries feature candidates from all parties on a single ballot. The top two finishers advance to the general election.

* Presidential primaries were held March 12

President

U.S. Senate

Democrat Maria Cantwell is favored to win a 5th term. She is joined by ten others on the all-party ballot, including five Republicans, three independents, and one Democrat.

Cantwell and Republican Raul Garcia are expected to advance to the general election. Garcia previously ran for governor in 2020, finishing fifth out of 36 (!!) candidates on the primary ballot that year.

Governor

Democratic Gov. Jay Inslee is not seeking a 4th term. A massive field of nearly 30 candidates is looking to succeed him. However, all signs point to Attorney General Bob Ferguson (D) and former U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert (R, WA-08) advancing to the general election.

Although Washington hasn't elected a Republican governor since 1980, the general election between these two is shaping up to be at least somewhat competitive.

Lieutenant Governor

In Washington, the lieutenant governor is chosen in a separate election from the governor. Incumbent Democrat Denny Heck is seeking a second term.

Five candidates, including Heck, are on the top-two primary ballot.

Attorney General

Incumbent Democrat Bob Ferguson is running for governor.

Two Democrats and one Republican are on the ballot, with two of them advancing to the general election.

Secretary of State

Incumbent Democrat Steve Hobbs won a special election in 2022 to complete the term of Republican Kim Wyman, who resigned in 2021. He is now seeking a full four-year term.

One of three other candidates on the ballot will advance with Hobbs in the general election. None are seen as a serious threat to him in November.

U.S. House

District Comments
3 One of the closest general election races in 2022 occurred in this district. Democrat Marie Gluesenkamp Perez flipped the district, besting Republican Joe Kent by less than 1%. Kent had finished second in the top-two primary that year, ousting incumbent Republican Jaime Herrera Beutler. A general election rematch is expected in November.
4 Republican Dan Newhouse has seven challengers on the ballot. The most notable are fellow Republicans Tiffany Smiley and Jerrod Sessler. Trump has endorsed both of these, as he remains angry with Newhouse for voting to impeach him in 2021. Given a split Democratic field in a strong GOP district, there's a decent chance that two Republicans will advance to the general election.
5 Incumbent Republican Cathy McMorris Rodgers is not seeking reelection. Eleven candidates are looking to succeed her. Spokane Treasurer Michael Baumgartner (R) is expected to advance; second place could go to a Democrat or another Republican.
6 Incumbent Democrat Derek Kilmer is not seeking reelection. There are five candidates on the ballot. Three appear to be competitive: state Sen Emily Randall (D), Public Lands Commissioner Hilary Franz (D) and state Sen. Drew MacEwan (R).
