2024 Presidential Election
The 2024 United States presidential election was the 60th quadrennial presidential election, held on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. The Republican ticket—Donald Trump, who was the 45th president of the United States, and JD Vance, the junior U.S. senator from Ohio—defeated the Democratic ticket—Kamala Harris, the incumbent vice president, and Tim Walz, the 41st governor of Minnesota.
The incumbent president, Democrat Joe Biden initially ran for re-election, facing little primary opposition. However, what was broadly considered a poor debate performance in June 2024 intensified concerns about his age and health, and led to calls within his party for him to leave the race. On July 21, he became the first incumbent to withdraw since Lyndon Johnson in 1968.
Trump, who lost to Biden in 2020, easily won renomination and went on to a 312-226 electoral college win. In doing so, he joined Grover Cleveland as the only indiviudals to win the presidency in non-consecutive terms.
