There are two vacancies each in the Delaware and Louisiana State Senate. All were created after the incumbent was elected to another position. Special elections Saturday will fill at least three of them.
Delaware State Senate
Democrats hold a 13-6 partisan advantage in the Delaware State Senate. The two vacant seats will be among ten next up for a four-year term in November, 2026.
Polls close at 8:00 PM Eastern Time. Here's an overview of the five candidates running across the two races.
District 1
Democrat Sarah McBride was elected to the U.S. House in November. She resigned from the State Senate on January 2.
District 1 includes portions of Wilmington. McBride was unopposed for reelection in 2022.
There are three candidates on the ballot: Democrat Dan Cruce, Republican Steve Washington, and Riley Figliola of the Nonpartisan Party.
District 5
Democrat Kyle Evans Gay was elected Lieutenant Governor in November. She assumed office on January 21 and resigned from her seat in the State Senate.
District 5 is north of Wilmington, along the Pennsylvania border. Gay was reelected by a 66% to 34% margin in 2022.
The nominees are Democrat Raymond Seigfried and Republican Brent Burdge.
Louisiana State Senate
Republicans hold 27 of 39 seats in the Louisiana State Senate. There are ten Democrats and two vacancies. Members serve four-year terms; all seats are next up in November, 2027.
Saturday's elections here are technically all-party primaries, although only one party is participating in each of them. Additionally, if one candidate gets a majority of the vote, they are elected. Otherwise, the top two will advance to a special general election on March 29.
Polls close at 9:00 PM Eastern Time.
District 14
Democrat Cleo Fields was elected to the U.S. House in November. He resigned from the State Senate in early January to take his seat in Congress.
No Republicans have contested the Baton Rouge area District 14 since 2011 and that streak will continue with the special election. There are three Democrats on the ballot.
District 23
Republican Jean-Paul Coussan resigned prior to being sworn in to the Louisiana Public Service Commission on January 1. Coussan was elected to that new role in November.
Coussan was unopposed for reelection to the Lafayette area District 23 in 2023. No Democrats have contested this seat since before 2011. There are two Republicans - Brach Myers and Jesse Regan - on the ballot.
As there are only two candidates, one is guaranteed a majority and will be elected based on Saturday's results.
