President

The final presidential nominating contests take place this week. This includes state-run primaries Tuesday in Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota. There is also a Democratic primary in the District of Columbia. The calendar concludes with Democratic caucuses in Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands on Saturday.

While the races have long been settled, the presumptive nominees have still faced some headwinds in states where voters have certain other options. For President Joe Biden, his main opposition has materialized on the 'Uncommitted' line, which has been used to register a protest against the handling of the Israel-Hamas war. Uncommitted (or 'No Preference') is an option in three of the states.

On the Republican side, Nikki Haley has drawn double-digit support in many states, despite dropping out months ago.  This week, Haley is only on the ballot in New Mexico, although there is a No Preference option in Montana. These are the first primaries since Donald Trump was convicted in a New York courtroom as well as the first since Haley said she will vote for the former president in November.

Donald Trump is unopposed on the ballot in New Jersey and South Dakota.

U.S. Senate

Montana, New Jersey, and New Mexico have seats up this year.

Montana

These primaries aren't expected to offer up much suspense, but will set into motion one of the most closely-contested Senate campaigns of 2024. Democratic Sen. Jon Tester is seeking a fourth term in a state likely to vote for Donald Trump by double-digits at the top of the ticket.

Each of Tester's three general election victories has been decided by a margin of less than 4%. Most recently, in 2018, he defeated Republican Matt Rosendale, now the outgoing representative of the state's 2nd congressional district.

Rosendale announced another Senate bid in early February, but withdrew less than a week later after Donald Trump endorsed the party's preferred candidate, Tim Sheehy.

New Jersey

Incumbent Robert Menendez is not seeking renomination by the Democratic Party, although he has filed to run as an independent. Menendez was indicted on corruption last September, with additional charges added in the months since.

Rep Andy Kim (NJ-03) entered the race the day after the Menendez indictment. He withstood a challenge from Tammy Murphy, wife of Gov. Phil Murphy and is now a heavy favorite for the nomination.

Four candidates are seeking the Republican nomination. The frontrunners appear to be Curtis Bashaw, backed by much of the state party establishment and Christine Serrano Glassner, who has been endorsed by Trump.

New Mexico

Democratic Sen. Martin Heinrich is seeking a third term. His general election opponent will be Republican Nella Domenici. Each is unopposed for their party's nomination.

Domenici is the daughter of Pete Domenici, who served six terms in the Senate. His final win in 2002 represented the last time New Mexico elected a Republican Senator.

U.S. House

There are four primaries of particular interest. Aside from the competitive Iowa district, Tuesday's winners will be decided favorites in November.

Iowa District 3 (Democratic)

Democrats are targeting freshman Republican Rep. Zach Nunn, who won this seat by less than 1% in 2022. Two candidates are seeking the nomination.

Montana District 2 (Republican)

After dropping a short-lived U.S. Senate bid, incumbent Rep. Matt Rosendale filed for reelection to this safely Republican seat. That didn't last very long, either.

Nine candidates are on the ballot to succeed Rosendale. The leading fundraisers are State Auditor Troy Downing and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Elise Arntzen. Also on the ballot is Danny Rehberg, who was the state's at-large U.S. Representative from 2001 through 2012.

Trump endorsed Downing on the eve of the primary.

New Jersey District 3 (Democratic)

Incumbent Democrat Andy Kim is running for U.S. Senate. There are five candidates looking to succeed him. The frontrunners appear to be State Assembly District 7 members Herb Conaway Jr. and Carol Murphy. (In New Jersey, there are two assembly seats in each district.)

New Jersey District 8 (Democratic)

Hoboken Mayor Ravinder Bhalla is challenging Rep. Rob Menendez, who is seeking a 2nd term. Bhalla is attempting to tie the incumbent to the legal troubles of his father, Sen. Bob Menendez.

Governor

Montana

Of Tuesday's primary states, only Montana has a gubernatorial election this year. Republican Greg Gianforte is seeking a second term. He has drawn a challenge from State Rep. Tanner Smith, although is likely to be renominated.

Ryan Busse is favored over Jim Hunt for the Democratic nomination.

Upcoming Elections

The final presidential nominating contests are this Saturday. Down-ballot primaries will continue through early September. Bookmark the Statewide Primary Calendar for all these dates and links to live results.
