Overview and Live Results: Colorado, New York, Utah Primaries; South Carolina Runoffs

Colorado, New York, and Utah hold statewide primaries Tuesday. There are also runoffs from the South Carolina primary earlier this month. These are the final down-ballot primaries until late July.

There is also a special election to fill a vacancy in the U.S. House. As it coincides with the regular primary, see 'Colorado District 4' in the U.S. House section below.

Use the links below for full results, which will be available after the last poll closings shown (Eastern Time).

* Primary Runoffs

U.S. Senate

Utah

Sen. Mitt Romney is not seeking reelection.

Four candidates are seeking the GOP nomination. All have raised seven-figure sums. The two frontrunners are Rep. John Curtis (UT-03) and Trent Staggs, mayor of the Salt Lake City suburb of Riverton.

Curtis is seen as the more mainstream/establishment candidate. Staggs has the endorsement of Donald Trump and many of those aligned with him.

Also on the ballot are former Utah House Speaker Brad Wilson and businessman Jason Walton. These candidates also have appeal to the Trump wing of the party, creating a three-way split for that vote, which will likely benefit Curtis.

That can be seen in two recent public polls of the race. Curtis leads, with a total slightly greater than the combined total of the other three candidates.

The primary winner is highly likely to be the next Senator from this ruby red state. Caroline Gleich is unopposed for the Democratic nomination.

New York

The primaries are uncontested. Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is seeking a third term. Her Republican opponent will be businessman Mike Sapraicone.

U.S. House

There are ten primaries we're watching. The marquee event, listed first, is in New York's 16th congressional district.

New York District 16 (Democratic)

Rep. Jamaal Bowman is facing a serious challenge to his seat from Westchester County Executive George Latimer. An Emerson College poll out earlier this month showed Latimer with a 17% lead. Bowman, a member of "The Squad" of progressive U.S. House members, has been a strong detractor of Israel's prosecution of the war with Hamas. Supporters of Israel are backing Latimer and their spending has turned this into one of the most expensive primary contests ever.

Colorado District 3 (Republican)

Republican Lauren Boebert narrowly won reelection here in 2022; it was the closest U.S. House race in the country that year. Her opponent, former Aspen councilman Adam Frisch, will be the Democratic nominee again this year. Boebert wanted no part of this rematch, choosing instead to run for the open District 4 seat on the other other side of the state.

A field of six is vying for the nomination. Jeffrey Hurd, former Chair of the Grand Junction Chamber of Commerce has led in fundraising, and has the most establishment backing. Democrats, for their part, are meddling in the race, spending in support of former state Rep. Ron Hanks. The thinking is that Hanks won't be as strong a general election candidate, putting Frisch in a somewhat better position to flip this GOP-leaning district.

Colorado District 4

Special Election + Republican Primary

Republican Ken Buck resigned from Congress in March. Tuesday's special election will fill the seat for the remainder of his term. This is the most conservative district in the state; Buck won his final term by 24% in 2022.

The nominees were chosen by party officials. Republican Greg Lopez is the former mayor of Parker, who unsuccessfully ran for governor in 2018 and 2022. Trisha Calvarese will represent the Democrats.

Primary voters in the district will also select nominees for the November general election. Lopez, while expected to win the special election, is not running for a full term.

Boebert's move from District 3 came after others had already entered the race; these candidates did not clear the field for her. The Cook Political Report ($) notes that the large field will split the sizeable anti-Boebert vote, helping her win the nomination. She also has the support of Donald Trump.

Colorado District 5 (Republican)

Doug Lamborn is not seeking reelection in this Republican-leaning district. The primary features former talk radio host Jeff Crank and State Party Chair Dave Williams. This is a battle of establishment (Crank) vs. MAGA (Williams) wings of the party. Williams has been endorsed by Donald Trump.

Colorado District 8 (Republican)

Newly created after 2020 Census apportionment gave the state an additional seat, this Denver area district is the most politically balanced in the state. In 2022, Democrat Yadira Caraveo won by less than 1% over Republican Barbara Kirkmeyer. Caraveo is unopposed for renomination.

Two Republicans are seeking the nomination.

New York District 1 (Democratic)

Republican Nick LaLota is seeking a 2nd term in this district that covers the majority of Long Island. Former CNN anchor John Avlon and chemist Nancy Goroff, the party nominee here in 2020, are seeking the Democratic nomination.

While the district is not entirely off the table for Democrats, LaLota, unopposed for renomination, will start out as the general election favorite.

New York District 22 (Republican)

Republican Brandon Williams is seeking a second term after a narrow 1% win in 2022.  His path to reelection was made somewhat more difficult after midcycle redistricting that shifted the district to the left.

State Sen. John Mannion and DeWitt Town Councilor Sarah Klee Hood are contesting the Democratic nomination.

South Carolina District 3 (Republican Runoff)

Incumbent Republican Jeff Duncan did not seek reelection. Seven candidates competed in the June 11; none achieved the required majority to win outright. Pastor Mark Burns led with 33% of the vote, while Air National Guard lieutenant colonel Sheri Biggs took the second runoff spot with 29%. Burns has been endorsed by Donald Trump, while Biggs has the backing of Gov. Henry McMaster.

Utah District 2 (Republican)

Freshman Rep. Celeste Maloy won a special election here in 2023. She supported legislation that Sen. Mike Lee opposed, with Lee subsequently endorsing her opponent, businessman Colby Jenkins. Maloy gained the endorsement of Donald Trump last week, putting her in a better position to turn back the challenge.

Utah District 3 (Republican)

Rep. John Curtis is running for U.S. Senate. Five candidates are on the ballot to succeed him in this safely Republican district.

Governor

Utah

Republican Gov. Spencer Cox is seeking a second term. He has drawn a primary challenge from state Rep. Phil Lyman. The winner will be favored against the Democratic nominee, state Rep. Brian King.
