March 30 Election Overview and Live Results

On March 30, there is a legislative general special election in Massachusetts, along with two GOP primary special elections in Alabama. Polls in all locations close at 8:00 PM ET. Live results will appear on this page after that time.

Massachusetts House District 19th Suffolk Special Election

There are 160 State House districts in Massachusetts. Currently, the chamber has 128 Democrats, 30 Republicans and 1 independent. The next regularly scheduled election is in 2022.

The 19th Suffolk District special election will fill a vacancy created by the resignation of Robert DeLeo in December, 2020. This will be the first contested election in the district since 2014; DeLeo ran unopposed in 2016, 2018 and 2020.

Alabama State Senate District 14 GOP Special Primary Election

There are 35 State Senate districts in Alabama. Currently, the chamber has 26 Republicans and 8 Democrats. The next regularly scheduled election is in 2022.

The District 14 special general election on July 13 will fill a vacancy created when Republican Cam Ward was appointed Director of the Alabama Bureau of Pardons and Paroles effective December 7, 2020.  In 2018, Ward was reelected with about 73% of the vote.

Virginia Teague Applebaum was the only Democrat to qualify. As a result, she is the nominee. In the GOP primary, if no candidate receives a majority of the vote, a top-two runoff will take place April 27. 

Alabama State House District 73 Special GOP Primary Election

There are 105 State House districts in Alabama. Currently, the chamber has 76 Republicans and 27 Democrats. The next regularly scheduled election is in 2022.

The District 73 special general election on July 13 will fill one of two vacancies. In this case, the seat became open after Republican Matt Fridy was elected to the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals in November, 2020. Fridy resigned from the Senate effective December 30. In 2018, Fridy was reelected with about 69% of the vote.

Sheridan Black was the only Democrat to qualify. As a result, Black is the nominee. In the GOP primary, if no candidate receives a majority of the vote, a top-two runoff will take place April 27.
