Live Results: State House Elections in Connecticut and Michigan

While all eyes will be on Tuesday's Texas Primary, we're also following a few State House elections. Connecticut filled one of two vacancies last week; this week it will have another election to bring the chamber back to full strength. In Michigan, there are primary elections in four districts.

Connecticut State House District 5

Democrats hold a sizeable 96-53 majority over Republicans in the Connecticut State House. There are two vacancies, although one will soon be filled by Republican William Pizzuto who won last week's District 71 special election. Members serve two year terms; the next regularly scheduled elections are in November. These will be contested using redistricted boundaries.

District 5 extends northward from downtown Hartford. The previous incumbent, Democrat Brandon McGee, resigned in January to work on Gov. Ned Lamont's (D) reelection campaign. In both 2018 and 2020, McGee won by about 85% to 15% over Republican Charles Jackson.

Jackson is back on the special election ballot, again facing an uphill battle. The Democratic nominee is Maryam Khan. Polls close at 8:00 PM Eastern Time.

Michigan State House Districts 15, 36, 43, 74 (Primaries)

Republicans hold a narrow 55-51 advantage over Democrats in the Michigan State House. Tuesday's primary elections will determine nominees for the four vacancies. Members serve two year terms; the next regularly scheduled elections are in November. These will be contested using redistricted boundaries.

In all four of these districts, the primary associated with the prior incumbent has a contested primary, while the out party's primary will be uncontested. The general elections will be held on May 3.

District 15 is in Dearborn, just west of Detroit. The previous incumbent, Democrat Abdullah Hammoud was elected Dearborn mayor in November. Hammoud was reelected by a 71% to 27% margin in 2020. Democrats Alabas Farhat and Jeffrey Pepper are competing for the nomination. The GOP primary is uncontested; Ginger Shearer will be the nominee.

District 36 sits between Pontiac and Macomb Township, north of Detroit. The previous incumbent, Republican Douglas Wozniak was elected to the State Senate in a special election this past November. Wozniak was reelected by a 69% to 31% margin in 2020. Four Republicans are on the primary ballot. James Diez is the Democrat in an uncontested primary.

District 43 is largely northwest of Pontiac. The seat became vacant when Republican Andrea Schroeder died in October. Schroeder had been reelected by a 60% to 40% margin in 2020. Four Republicans are looking to become the party's nominee. Kent Douglas will be the Democratic nominee.

Moving westward, District 74 is in the Grand Rapids area. The previous incumbent, Republican Mark Huizenga was elected to the State Senate in a special election this past November. Huizenga was reelected by a 63% to 37% margin in 2020. As in Districts 36 and 43, four Republicans are on the primary ballot. Carol Glanville will be the Democratic nominee.
