Texas
Texas holds the first statewide primary on the 2022 Election Calendar Tuesday. With North Carolina rescheduled from March 8 to May 17, the Lone Star State's nominating contests are a full two months earlier than any other state.
We're following statewide races including Governor, Lt. Governor, and Attorney General. There are also U.S. House and State Legislative primaries that will be conducted using redistricted boundaries.
Polls close at 8:00 PM Eastern Time, except 9:00 PM Eastern for those areas of West Texas that follow Mountain Time. For those voting today, you can look up your polling place here.
Texas Top 5
Overview and live results for five of Tuesday's most anticipated primaries.
Attorney General (Republican)
Ken Paxton is seeking a third term. Facing ongoing legal issues, he has drawn several high-profile challengers. If polling proves accurate, Paxton is likely to finish first, but fall short of the 50% needed to avoid a May 24 runoff.
Governor (Republican)
Gov. Greg Abbott (R) is seeking a third four-year term. He is being challenged from the right, but is expected to be renominated.
U.S. House District 28 (Democratic)
Rep. Henry Cuellar (D) appears to be the only threatened Democratic incumbent. The subject of an FBI investigation, he faces a challenge from the left in attorney Jessica Cisneros. It is a rematch of the 2020 primary, where Cuellar prevailed by less than 4%.
U.S. House District 8 (Republican)
A large field of hopefuls look to succeed the retiring Kevin Brady in this safe GOP district. Most of the attention is on Morgan Luttrell and Christian Collins, representing the establishment and MAGA wings of the party, respectively. According to Split Ticket, "this race could be the most competitive Congressional primary in Texas." A runoff between these two is possible.
U.S. House District 3 (Republican)
There are many other interesting primaries, but we selected this one for the list as it seems to be gaining interest as one to watch. Rep. Van Taylor is facing blowback in this conservative district for supporting the Jan. 6 commission. His top rival is former Collin County Judge Keith Self. A runoff between these two is possible.
