Live Results: Virginia, Mississippi Legislative Special Elections

Four legislative special elections - three in Virginia, and one in Mississippi - are being contested Tuesday, January 10.

Polls close at 7:00 PM in Virginia and 8:00 PM in Mississippi (all times Eastern).

Virginia State Senate District 7

Democrats hold a narrow 21-18 edge over Republicans in the Virginia State Senate. Members serve four-year terms, with all 40 seats to be contested in 2023.

As this special election will complete a term last contested in 2019, it will be conducted using boundaries prior to redistricting.

Norfolk area District 7 was vacated in November by Republican Jen Kiggans after she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.

The nominees, Republican Kevin Adams and Democrat Aaron Rouse, were chosen in party-run primaries. The race has drawn national attention (and money) as the General Assembly is expected to consider a proposal by Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin to further restrict abortion in the state.

This is a competitive district: Kiggins was elected by less than a 1% margin in 2019.

Virginia House of Delegates Districts 24 and 35

Like the State Senate, the Virginia House of Delegates is also closely divided. Here, Republicans hold a 51-47 edge over Democrats. Members serve two-year terms, with all 100 seats up this November.

Note that redistricting was not finalized until after the 2021 elections, so these special elections will be conducted under the boundaries used that year.

District 24: This district borders West Virginia, extending east toward Charlottesville and southeast toward Lynchburg. Serving in his second term, Republican Ronnie Campbell died in December.  His widow, Ellen Campbell, was unopposed for the party's nomination. Democrats chose Jade Harris in a party-run primary. Both are political newcomers. Ronnie Campbell won by 73% to 27% in 2021.

District 35: Democrat Mark Keam resigned from this suburban Washington, D.C. seat in September. He had served since 2010 and ran unopposed from 2015 through 2019. In 2021, he defeated his GOP opponent by a 69% to 31% margin. The nominees are Democrat Holly Seibold and Republican Monique Baroudi.

Mississippi State House District 23

Republicans dominate the Mississippi State House, holding 76 of 122 seats. There are 42 Democrats and three independents. Members serve four year terms, with all seats up this November.

As this special election will complete a term last contested in 2019, it will be conducted using boundaries prior to redistricting.

District 23 is in the northcentral part of the state. Republican Charles Jim Beckett resigned in September. He had been in the State House since 2004 and was unopposed in the two most recent cycles, 2015 and 2019.

As a special election, all candidates will appear without partisan affiliation. There are three candidates on the ballot. If none of them gets a majority of the vote, a runoff will be held January 31.
