Live Results: Jacksonville Mayor, Georgia State House Special Election

The presidential race is ramping up. We note that Joe Exotic, aka 'The Tiger King', announced his bid last week.

It is another quiet week on the election front. There's a mayoral election in Jacksonville and a State House special election in Georgia.

Polls in both close at 7:00 PM Eastern Time.

Mayoral Election

Jacksonville, Florida

Jacksonville is the largest city by land area in the lower 48 states and 12th largest in the country in terms of population, at about 950,000.1 1Population rankings are based on July 1, 2021 Census Bureau population estimates. They are for the city itself, not the associated metropolitan area.

The city is also the most populous with a Republican mayor. The incumbent, Lenny Curry, is ineligible to run for a third term. There are four Republicans, two Democrats and an independent on the all-party ballot to succeed Curry. In addition, there is a certified write-in candidate.

Two February polls (Univ. of North Florida, St. Pete Polls) show Democrat Donna Deegan the frontrunner, with Republican Daniel Davis in the second position. Both are well ahead of the rest of the field, but neither are are close to the 50% threshold needed to avoid a May 16 runoff.

Legislative Special Election

Georgia State House District 75

Republicans hold a 101-77 edge over Democrats in the Georgia House of Representatives. There are two vacancies. The one not being contested Tuesday is in District 68, where freshman Democratic Rep. Tish Naghise died earlier this month. A special election will be scheduled by Gov. Brian Kemp (R).

The vacancy in District 75 occurred when state Rep. Mike Glanton (D) resigned in January. The District is in the southern part of the Atlanta metro area.

In Georgia, all candidates in a special election appear on a single ballot. If nobody gets a majority of the vote, a top two runoff is held.

In this case, there are two Democrats and one Republican vying for the seat. The Republican is Della Ashley, who was the party nominee in the regular 2022 election, losing to Glanton by a lopsided 89% to 11%. The runoff, if needed, will be April 18.
