Biden and Trump Poised to Clinch Party Nominations: Live Results for March 12 Primaries

A rematch of the 2020 presidential election will take another step toward being official on Tuesday. Both Joe Biden and Donald Trump are expected to surpass the delegate threshold needed to clinch their respective party's nomination.

Georgia, Mississippi, and Washington hold presidential primaries. Off the mainland, Republicans will caucus in Hawaii and a week of voting will come to an end for Democrats in the Northern Mariana Islands.

There are also congressional primaries in Mississippi. All Mississippi Results >>

Finally, there are two State House special elections in New Hampshire. Those results are toward the bottom of this article.

President

Delegates

Republican Party

As of Tuesday morning, Donald Trump was less than 140 delegates short of the 1,215 delegates needed to lock up his 3rd straight Republican nomination. There are 161 delegates available across the four Republican contests on Tuesday. With no major competitors active in the race, the math looks favorable for Trump to cross the threshold.

Democratic Party

It was previously expected that Joe Biden would win the Democratic nomination on March 19th. However, media outlets, most notably The Associated Press have now allocated him the delegates from Florida (224) and Delaware (19) in his total. The Democratic presidential primary was canceled in both those states, reflecting election law where primaries are not held if only a single candidate is on the ballot.

Including those delegates leaves Biden only about 100 short of the 1,968 pledged delegates needed. With well over 200 delegates available Tuesday, and a Democratic allocation methodology requiring 15% vote share to qualify, the president should easily surpass what is needed for renomination.

Presidential Results

Contests are listed in order of poll closing, adjusted to Eastern Time.

Northern Mariana Islands (Democratic)

Final day of voting ended at 4:00 AM Eastern Time. Results were already available at the time of publication.

Georgia

Polls close at 7:00 PM Eastern Time.

Mississippi

Polls close at 8:00 PM Eastern Time

Washington

Polls close at 11:00 PM Eastern Time

Hawaii (Republican)

Caucus ends at 2:00 AM Eastern Time on March 13.

Democrats Abroad

This is a global primary for Democrats living abroad that aren't voting in a state or territorial presidential contest. Only U.S. citizens that are members of Democrats Abroad may participate. The final day of voting this year is March 12, which is the date used on the 2024 Presidential Calendar. Tabulation by mail may continue for several days. Results are expected on or before March 25.

U.S. Senate

Mississippi

Republican Sen. Roger Wicker is seeking a 3rd full term. He has drawn two primary challengers, State Sen. Dan Eubanks and retired Marine Colonel Ghannon Burton.

Wicker is expected to win renomination, and will be a heavy favorite against Ty Pinkins in the fall. Pinkins is unopposed on the Democratic ballot.

The state last elected a Democratic Senator in 1982.

Polls close at 8:00 PM Eastern Time. In the unlikely event that no candidate gets a majority, the top two finishers will have an April 2 runoff.

Special Elections

New Hampshire State House (2 Districts)

Polls for both of these elections close at 7:00 PM Eastern Time.

Republicans currently hold a 201-193 edge in the 400 member New Hampshire House of Representatives. Two members are unaffiliated with a party, while four seats are vacant.

Members serve two year terms; the next regular elections are in November.

District Rockingham 21 is located near Portsmouth. Democrat Robin Vogt resigned in December, 2023. Vogt was unopposed in the 2022 election.

District Strafford 11 is a three-member district near Dover. All three seats were won by Democrats in 2022. One of them became vacant when Hoy Menear died in November, 2023.
