Live Results: New York Congressional District 26 Special Election

A congressional vacancy in New York will be filled Tuesday. There is also a special election runoff in Alabama.

New York U.S. House District 26

Democrat Brian Higgins stepped down from this Buffalo area district in February. Nominees were selected by their respective parties. State Sen. Tim Kennedy (D) will face off against West Seneca Town Supervisor Gary Dickson.

Higgins won his final term by a 64% to 36% margin in 2022 and the seat is expected to remain in Democratic hands.

Polls close at 9:00 PM Eastern Time.

If Kennedy does prevail, the House will be at 217 Republicans, 213 Democrats once he is sworn in. Three upcoming scheduled special elections are all in safely Republican seats: CA-20 on May 21, OH-06 on June 11, CO-04 on June 25.

Alabama State House District 27 (Runoff)

Republicans Jeana Ross (39% of the vote) and Alan Miller (21%) advanced from the April 2 GOP primary. The runoff is required as no candidate received a majority.

No Democrats contested the seat. The special general election is scheduled for July 16; it isn't clear if that will be necessary.

Either way, the winner of this runoff is expected to be the next representative, completing the term of Republican Wes Kitchens who was elected to the State Senate earlier this year. The seat is next up for election in 2026.

Polls close at 8:00 PM Eastern Time.
