Live Results: St. Louis Mayoral Primary; Oklahoma Special Election

The first scheduled election we're following in 2025 is Tuesday's St. Louis mayoral primary. There is also a special primary for a vacant State Senate seat in Oklahoma.

Polls close for both at 8:00 PM Eastern Time.

St. Louis Mayor (Primary)

St. Louis is the 76th largest city in the United States, with a population of about 280,000. That is for the city itself, not the metropolitan area. Mayors serve four-year terms.

Democrat Tishaura Jones is seeking a second term in office. She has three challengers in this nonpartisan primary, where the top two finishers will advance to the April 8 general election.

This primary uses a system called 'approval voting'. Voters can mark their ballot for any candidates of which they approve. That can be as many as all of the candidates on the ballot. The two candidates receiving the most approval votes will advance to the April 8 general election.

Approval voting was first used here in the 2021 mayoral primary. That saw Jones finish first with 57%. Cara Spencer had 46%. Lewis Reed and Andrew Jones were eliminated with 39% and 14%, respectively. All but Reed are back on the 2025 ballot.

A late February poll conducted by Remington Research Group showed a Jones vs. Spencer general election rematch to be likely.

Oklahoma State Senate District 8

Republicans hold an overwhelming 39-8 advantage over Democrats in the Oklahoma State Senate. There is one vacancy. Members serve four-year staggered terms; the even-numbered districts are up for election in 2026.

District 8 encompasses a largely rural area in the east central part of the state. Republican Roger Thompson resigned in November after about ten years in the Senate. Thompson was unopposed for reelection in 2022.

Nathan Brewer was the only Democrat that filed; he'll be joined by independent Steve Sanford and the Republican nominee in the May 13 general election.

Five Republicans are competing for the nomination to succeed Thompson. If no candidate gets a majority, the top two finishers will face off in an April 1 runoff.
